How to save WhatsApp group photos (iPhone & Android)
· 5 min read
Group chats are where the best photos end up — and where they get lost. Here's how to get them all onto your phone, then somewhere safer.
Why WhatsApp group photos disappear
Everyone on the trip shares their shots in the group, then the chat moves on. Weeks later the photos are buried under hundreds of messages, compressed, and only living inside one app on one phone. Change phones without a backup and they're gone.
The fix takes a few minutes: save the photos to your camera roll, back them up, and ideally print the ones that matter.
Save WhatsApp group photos on iPhone
To save one or several photos from a group:
- Open the group chat and tap the group name at the top.
- Tap Media, Links and Docs to see every photo shared in the group.
- Tap Select, choose the photos you want, then tap the share icon and Save.
- To save new photos automatically, go to WhatsApp Settings → Chats and turn on Save to Photos (or set it per group under the group's Save to Photos option).
Save WhatsApp group photos on Android
On most Android phones, photos you open are already stored on the device and appear in your gallery under a WhatsApp Images album.
- Open the group, tap the group name, then Media, links and docs.
- Long-press to select multiple photos, then use the share or save option.
- For automatic saving, go to Settings → Chats and turn on Media visibility, or set it per group in the group's info screen.
- Check Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download so photos download over Wi-Fi.
Get the best quality you can
WhatsApp compresses photos by default. Ask the group to send originals — newer versions of WhatsApp let you pick HD when sending, or share as a document to keep the full file. The original is always on the photographer's phone, so if a particular shot matters, ask them for it directly.
Back them up — then print the ones that matter
Once they're in your camera roll, iCloud Photos or Google Photos will back them up. But a backup is a folder you'll rarely open. A printed album is the version people actually look at.
